UNM in Cuba: Culture, Art and Architecture

This program is a unique combination of Cuban culture, history, archaeology, architecture, art and international relations. We explore Cuba on walking tours doing photography and interacting with the Cuban people in their neighborhoods. We will visit the countryside and visit a tobacco farm and see the famous Vinales National Park. We visit Ernest Hemingway’s House and Museum and the National Museum of Cuban Art. We visit orchid gardens to do some hiking and birdwatching. Cuba is a country in transition and a once in a lifetime experience to see how the Cubans are facing the future developing their tourism and economy.

Phil Alldritt is a Professor of Anthropology, Archaeology, Political Science, and Latin American Studies at the University of New Mexico –Taos since 2000.Traveling with a U.S Treasury permits for research and Education he has conducted 62 trips to Cuba since 1999 focusing on the historical architecture and culture of Havana, Cienfuegos, Trinidad, and Santiago. He has been a professional guide for Mayan archaeological sites in Belize and Guatemala and Mexico every year since 1985. He lived in Belize for 6 years while becoming a National Tour Guide Instructor for the Belizean Government. He lived in Jamaica 2 years tour guiding.  He has a Master's Degree in Latin American Studies from the University of Arizona. Phil is a PADI Divemaster and has lead scuba diving and snorkeling tours all over the Caribbean since 1984. He is a first aid instructor.
