Overview

Universidad of los Andes also commonly self-styled as Uniandes is a private research university located in the city centre of Bogotá, Colombia. Founded in 1948 by a group of Colombian intellectuals led by Mario Laserna Pinzón, it was the first Colombian university established as nonsectarian (independent from any political party or religious institution). Uniandes has traditionally educated the latin american academic elite, and it is broadly considered to be one of the best universities in this region.

Academics

The university is academically composed of nine faculties, three special academic entities — offering 31 undergraduate, 18 doctoral, and 38 graduate degree-granting programs.

Courses are conducted in Spanish with some readings in English. There is an options Spanish language course before the fall semester for exchange students. http://ele.uniandes.edu.co/

Universidad de los Andes has an orientation session of three days on Thursday and Friday the week before classes begin. The orientation session for International students is highly recommended since we explain academic issues relevant to their stay.

Location

Bogotá is the capital of Colombia and Cundinamarca Department, with 6,778,691 inhabitants as of 2005. In 2015, it expected to grow and reach 7,976,700 habitants. Bogotá and its metropolitan area, which includes municipalities such as Chía, Cota, Soacha, Cajicá, La Calera, Madrid, Funza, Mosquera, Tabio, Tenjo and El Rosal, had a population of around 12 million in 2014.

The university doesn’t have accommodation on campus or off campus for students. But, they do help find some possibilities. Each student is responsible for arranging housing on their own.

VISA

All exchange students studying for two semesters require a student visa according to Colombian Law. In order to get this visa, students will receive the two documents needed from Uniandes by June 5, or November 15 according to their exchange semester. Students should check with the nearest Colombian embassy or consulate about the other documents needed in order to get their student visa.

On the other hand, students studying for just one semester (less than 180 days) have to get an entrance permit at the airport when they arrive, if they do not need a tourist visa; otherwise, they will need to get the student visa. This permit is valid for 90 days, and they have to renew it for another period of 90 days in Bogota.
