Traditional Knowledge & Cultural Summer Exchange Program: US-MEXICO Indigenous Planning

The proposed program aims to promote networking and institutional partnership-building with two higher educational institutions who work, collaborate, and research with indigenous communities. The program and its activities will take place over a summer period. On the US side, the proposed program will be hosted by the University of New Mexico (UNM) Indigenous Design and Planning Institute (iD+Pi) and the Historic Preservation and Regionalism (HP+R) Graduate Certificate Program. On the Mexican side, the Architecture, Planning, and Anthropology Departments at the Benemerita Universidad Autonoma de Puebla (BUAP) will host. The activities will encompass a three-week intensive and immersive study abroad course with several days dedicated to strategic planning with the BUAP and UNM partners in order to lay the groundwork for a recurring multi-institutional indigenous student exchange program, as well as a one credit spring course with both institutions. The proposed program addresses a gapin the higher education curriculum through a building of curricula in indigenous planning by modelling experiences that inform and empower indigenous communities to build on local assets and cultural identity. A full curriculum in indigenous planning leading to a Master’s Degree Concentration in Indigenous Planning has already been established the MCRP, UNM. This is the only degree of its kind in the nation and it is a model that BUAP desires to develop for its faculty and students.
