Overview

This program is a professional development experience where elementary and dual license students in the College of Education spend one month teaching and observing in schools in Vienna, Austria.

Students will teach in 2-3 primary schools only. There will be opportunties to observe lessons in a middle school.

The professional development experience is designed to enhance the students' role as a classroom teacher by building on their theoretical and content based learning with practical application in the classroom. Students work with mentor and cooperating teachers to develop lesson plans, classroom activities and other projects.

Content lessons are in English and typical subjects taught are language arts, history/social studies, science physical education and the arts. Academic content is developmentally appropriate and age specific.

Early Elementary and Elementary Education majors are eligible for this summer internship program. Preference for students in their 3rd or 4th year of education study.

Course Objectives:

Plan English lessons for Austrian children learning English as a Second Language
Implement lessons as planned and/or with real time to meet the needs of diverse learners
Confer with Austrian teachers about best practices and local curriculum and pedagogical approaches
Visit 2-3 schools and observe Austrian approaches to teaching different content areas
Explore cultural and historic landmarks and consider how to integrate the study of Austria into US teaching

Location

This program is a one month professional development experience in Vienna, Austria. The students will teach in elementary schools in the 23rd district in Vienna. Students will be able to visit 2-3 schools in the area.

Housing

Housing is guaranteed for all students who participate in the program. Students will stay in a double room in a student residence hall. Room costs will be covered for all students.

Additional living costs are the student's responsiblity (ex. food, laundry, toiletries, etc)

Program Reviews

Applying for the STARS Program was one of the best decisions I ever made. I was nervous at first as I am a single mother with three girls. My children encouraged me because they knew I would never get this type of opportunity to teach in Austria again. They felt that because my life has revolved around them for so long, it was time to do something for myself that would benefit what I plan to do for a career--teaching. The students were so welcoming and the staff was always encouraging. This experience was life changing and I still will think back to our time there and my heart just soars. I think that when I finish my Dual License degree and am teaching in my own classroom, many of the ideas and tools I brought back will not only benefit my students, but will make me a more effective teacher.

Going to Vienna was the most wonderful experience I have ever had. I got to see so many wonderful things, meet so many amazing people and each such delicious food. I got to teach to a wide variety of students, meet other educators and experience a whole new culture. I felt myself grow more in those five weeks than I ever have in my entire life. I feel so proud to say I have been to Vienna and I cannot wait to visit. I would recommend this to anyone and everyone. There aren't words to describe how amazing my time was in Vienna, I feel like it is a part of me. I hope anyone who reads this takes my word and decides to study abroad.
