Overview

The UNM SHS International Collaboration Project (Comunidad Crecer program branch) is a unique cross-cultural collaboration between the UNM SHS department and the Comunidad Crecer school located in Mexico City. For over 30 years, UNM SHS has partnered with CC’s multidisciplinary team to enhance services for students with multiple disabilities and their families. Participation in this program is open to Spanish speaking SHS graduate students interested in cultivating clinical and linguistic skills to support culturally responsive practices both internationally and locally. The CC program offers unique clinical, academic, multidisciplinary, and linguistic opportunities which attract SLP graduate students to UNM from all over the United States. The CC program mission parallels that of the greater UNM SHS department aimed at: 

  • Collaborating to share quality information regarding assessment and treatment relating to communication sciences and disorders. 
  • Providing quality education and clinical experiences to become effective professionals with an emphasis on culturally diverse, multilingual, and multidisciplinary engagement.

The structure of the UNM SHS International Collaboration Project/Comunidad Crecer is as follows:

Registration and completion of a 1 credit course

Telehealth interprofessional exchange/International Telehealth Clinical Practicum 

Weekly planning meetings via Zoom with UNM SHS CC Program and CI program directors

Periodic collaboration meetings via Zoom with the faculty at Comunidad Crecer 

Bilingual Telehealth Clinical Clock Hours (if possible) 

Travel to Mexico City and International Clinical Practice

Mexico City for a weeklong clinical rotation

Students will earn clock hours by working with UNM Clinical Instructors and CC multidisciplinary staff to provide evaluation, treatment and education in Spanish to CC students and their families.

* Since space is limited for travel, students who can demonstrate good academic and clinical standing will be given priority.  Participation in each zoom meeting is mandatory for those students who will be traveling.
