Overview

Universidad San Francisco de Quito USFQ (informally Universidad San Francisco, or simply USFQ) is a liberal-arts university located in Quito, Ecuador. It was the first totally private self-financed university in Ecuador and the first liberal-arts institution in the Andean region.

The university now enrolls 5,500 students, 4,500 of whom are undergraduates. The university each year has about 100 indigenous students and 1000 international students participate in USFQ academic programs. USFQ has developed a scholarship program for indigenous students, offering full scholarships to the best students of public high schools throughout Ecuador.Although USFQ receives no funding from the government of Ecuador, its faculty comprises one-half of all the people in that nation who hold a doctorate.

USFQ main campus is located in Cumbayá, outside of Quito (capital city of Ecuador), where students use a library, education and research laboratories, classrooms, and seven restaurants. USFQ is the only university in the world that owns a campus in the Galapagos Islands, and a campus in the Yasuni Biosphere Reserve (Tiputini Biodiversity Station), one of Earth's most biodiverse area.

Location

Quito, Ecuador's capital, sits high in the Andean foothills at an altitude of 2,850m. Constructed on the foundations of an ancient Incan city, it’s known for its Spanish colonial buildings dating back more than 500 years. It all can be taken in from the TelefériQo, a gondola ride up the Pichincha volcano, with the Parque Vulqano amusement park at its base.

Housing

USFQ houses interested international students with carefully screened host families in Quito. Host families are required to provide students with their own bedroom (bathroom may be shared), Wifi internet access, and two meals per day (breakfast and dinner). Host families generally live within a 15-45 minute commute by public transportation from the USFQ campus in Cumbayá.

Other

UNM's exchange agreement with USFQ has reached an imbalance and all future UNM students, for the time being, will have to pay USFQ tuition directly to them (around $4,000 per semester). You will not pay UNM tuition. Students may use their UNM lottery scholarships to do this, but will have to pay the extra tution. Until the exchange balance is equalized, this arrangement will stay in effect.

This arrangement is also true for the GAIAS and the Rehearsing Change program.
