Overview

AIU's Summer Program is a six-week, six-credit, intensive Japanese language and culture study program designed for highly motivated undergraduate students around the world. Participants can take elementary courses taught by experienced Japanese instructors to hone their Japanese language skills in a small class environment.

The program is designed for absolute beginners, beginning learners, and advanced beginning learners of Japanese language.

Tuition is waived for accepted exchange students. Additional costs are not covered in the exchange agreement.

Students interested in this program must complete their UNM study abroad application by February 10th, 2023. After being accepted by UNM, students must apply to AIU directly by March 10th, 2023. There is limited availability for the tuition-free status of this program!

The Akita Summer Program is a six-week, six-credit, intensive Japanese language and culture study program designed for highly motivated undergraduate students around the world. Participants can take elementary courses taught by experienced Japanese instructors to hone their Japanese language skills in a small class environment.

The Summer Program 2023 will offer the following three elementary courses. Participants are required to take a Japanese Placement Test upon arrival at AIU. Each student will be assigned to one of the classes according to the results of the test. The program is designed for absolute beginners, beginning learners, and advanced beginning learners of Japanese language.

Location

Akita International University (AIU) is located in a rural area, ideal for experiencing traditional Japanese culture and rich natural beauty.

The campus is conveniently located 10 minutes by car from the Akita Airport. There are regular buses to the nearby AEON shopping center and JR Wada train station.

Akita is a mountainous northern prefecture on Honshu, Japan's main island. It's home to hot springs, notably those surrounding Lake Tazawa. Kakunodate town has a historic district of wooden samurai mansions, some of which are museums. Bordering the Sea of Japan is the capital city Akita, famous for Kanto Matsuri, a summer festival in which participants balance long bamboo poles topped with lanterns.

Housing

Summer Program students are assigned double rooms in Komachi Residence Hall (Komachi Residence Hall is being renovated and will be completed in April 2023. The updated image photo(s) of the new Komachi Residence Hall will be available on this page when it is ready.) Each student will have a chance to have a Japanese roommate and/or suitemate(s): a roommate is a student who shares a room and a bathroom, and a suitemate is a student who shares only a bathroom.

Successful applicants are required to check-in at the Komachi Residence Hall (Dormitory) during the designated time on June 19 only, and they are required to stay until the end of the Closing Ceremony on July 28.

Late arrival and early departure are not allowed.

Costs

Admission and Tuition fees will be waived for exchange students from our partner institutions. The program fee for Exchange Students is 190,000 JPY per student. The program fee includes room and board, and activities such as Japanese culture workshops and field trips.

All students must pay an additional 5,000 JPY as a refundable deposit (195,000 JPY in total per exchange student).

I have traveled internationally and stayed places long term, but getting a chance to live there and be more involved with locals really gave me a chance to experience another culture unlike any other previous traveling experience. I learned so much and met so many interesting people I would recommend trying to study abroad at least once to anyone!
