Overview

This course is titled African Presence in Mexico and is being proposed by the Chicana and Chicano Studies Department. During this course, UNM faculty will partner with faculty members in Veracruz and with officials at the Instituto Nacional de Antropología y Historia (INAH) to offer a unique; team-taught course based upon subject matter developed in the acclaimed museum exhibit, The African Presence in Mexico. This timely course will introduce UNM students to the African presence in Mexico just as that country pilots a new set of census categories that will for the first time in nearly a century recognize people of African descent in Mexico.  There are several student learning outcomes associated with this course. Students will examine the multiple ways that Chicanos and Latinos have been defined and named in the United States, as well as understand the contributions Chicanos and Latinos have made to the larger U.S. culture internationally. Students will discuss the ways in which historical events, social and economic change, and social movements shape and are reflected in changing personal identity, family experiences, stories, and memories. Students will employ the terms, concepts, and methods required in the study of Chicana and Chicano Studies through the following frameworks: economic, political, historical, racial, class, familial, gender, immigration, educational, artistic expressions, and literature. Students will write and speak to discover new insights. Students will revise their ideas and their writing in order to achieve expression that are clear, compelling, and challenging. Students will analyze critically the social construction of race, class, gender, and sexuality as related to Chicano, Hispano, and Mexicano communities. Students will develop critical thinking and communication skills through the use of journaling, surveys, quizzes, creative projects, identification analysis, and group projects. Students will engage in community-based projects involving field based research for a final class project.
